J’ai choisi de travailler avec du cuir de vachette à tannage végétal, produit dans une tannerie française reconnue pour ses pratiques et conditions de travail responsables.

Le tannage végétal repose sur une tradition artisanale ancestrale qui consiste à transformer une peau animale en cuir à l’aide d’actifs naturels présents dans l’écorce et les feuilles de différents végétaux (chêne, châtaignier, mimosa…) plutôt qu’avec des métaux lourds tels que le chrome ou l’aluminium comme il est généralement pratiqué. Beaucoup moins répandu que le tannage au chrome (qui représente environ 85% de la production) car plus coûteux et lent, le tannage végétal est surtout bien moins polluant et moins nocif pour la santé de ceux qui le produisent et de ceux qui l’utilisent. Ce cuir est biodégradable, et les eaux usées liées à sa production sont recyclées.

D’une haute qualité et très résistant, ce cuir m’a également séduite par la profondeur de ses teintes, la douceur de son toucher et son aspect très naturel. Le cuir étant peu recouvert, il conserve des irrégularités et une sensibilité à l’usage et à la lumière qui lui confèrent selon moi toute sa singularité et son charme…

VEGETABLE-TANNED LEATHER
I have chosen to work with vegetable-tanned cowhide leather, which comes from a french tannery with responsible environmental practices and working conditions.

Vegetable tanning is a traditional technique which exists for centuries and takes advantage from the tannic acids naturally found in some plant species to turn a skin into a hide. By using natural agents (bark, roots, leaves…) instead of chromium salts or metallic based solution, this process is very time and labor intensive, significantly longer than chrome-tanned leather, which accounts for 85% of normal production. But it is much less harmful to the health of those who produce it and those who use it. This leather is biodegradable, and the wastewater associated with its production is recycled.

I find this high-quality and hard-wearing leather very attractive because of the depth of its colours, the softness of its feel and its wholly natural appearance. As this full grain leather had no synthetic covering and minimal finishing treatment, it retains natural flaws and will respond gracefully to handling and to light. This gives the leather its unique charm…
